Can an infant be saved? Or do all infants go to hell? If an infant can be saved without calling on Christ, then the answer is, yes, someone can be saved without knowing Jesus.
Can a person with a severe mental handicap be saved? Or do all such people go to hell? If such a person can be saved, then the answer is, yes, someone can be saved without knowing Jesus.
Were people in the period before Jesus was born saved? Or did they all perish? If these people could be saved, then the answer is, yes, someone can be saved without knowing Jesus. These people responded to God according to their state of knowledge. Why not now? Has the coming of Jesus made God less gracious?
Their is a difference between Jesus as the ontological basis of salvation, and salvation by knowledge of Jesus.
