Reading the full article definitely clued me into what MacArthur is saying here and is definitely worth-reading and learning from. Attention paid to our temporal families is not an ends in and of itself, but a part of the greater purpose of equipping our wives and children for the purposes of God's kingdom. God commands men to be spiritual leaders of their families and hands them the responsibility of imparting knowledge of Scripture so that their household's live out the Gospel. A man who is doing this duty should have a family that displays love to Christian brothers and sisters outside the nuclear family.

I completely stand behind what you're saying here! I think as Christians we must carefully study Scripture in order to understand its defining principles rather than simply looking for a lists of dos and don'ts. While there are certain "rules" in the Bible, the way the day-to-day Christian life is spoken about is rooted more in guiding principles (i.e. loving God first and foremost, loving your neighbor, having a husband-wife relationship that mirrors Christ's relationship to the father, being dependent on God like a child). It's in these guiding principles we're best able to live the Gospel in a plethora of life's situation, and give concrete answers to very specific ways practically living out faith. Great post Julian!

It is not up to us as Ministers, to be "everything to everyone" in preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ! The Gospel is all about Jesus Christ! We are called to preach His Gospel which will introduce unbelievers to their salvation in Jesus Christ! We cannot rewrite the Word of God nor reinvent Christ to our liking, in the name of serving His people! We must allow God to work His plan of salvation and spiritual growth in the lives of those He calls to be saved. If we are faithful to our "great commission", it is incumbent upon God's indwelling spirit to do the rest of the work of ministry. Pastors are attempting to do everything and be everything in the church, but what they were called to do! It is not put upon us to be a Marriage Counselor; a Drug and Rehabilitation Counselors; Psychologist or Psychiatrist, in order to Pastor the Body of Christ! The reason we have "Pastor burn-out", is they attempt to micro-manage everything in the church and wear hats that they were not called to wear! God provides believers in the Body of Christ to handle all other aspects of ministry to the church.

"I agree that ecuminicism is the devil's game."

I find this statement tragic. Unfortunately, this thread is not the place for me to respond to this comment. To that end, I've posted a reply to this comment at my blog (link: http://exlibris1.wordpress.com/2012/02/15/ecumeni.... Patchnix, if you (or anyone else) are interested, please see my post and we can get some discussion going on the topic.

Thanks, Michael. So in each case we need to see how each man is interpreting and applying Scripture in this particular instance.
